13 Reasons Why I Should Be Here

The second season of “13 Reasons Why” has been out for a few months now and it got me thinking about making my own positive version of this list. It’s important to share my takeaway when this show brings up controversial feelings for so many people. Because suicide is a sensitive topic, it’s rarely portrayed in such a forward way like it is in this series and it actually inspired me to create a list of 13 reasons why I should be here:

  1. The best days of my life haven't happened yet: I haven't gotten married, had children, traveled to Thailand, written a children's book, or whatever those best days end up being … I know they are yet to come.
  1. My family: my mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, aunt, cousins, etc … including my amazing fiance (and his beautiful children).

  2. My friends: although this changes, I am grateful for the ones who are meant to be in my life right now.
  1. I am still making my mark in the world: through my work as a therapist, Therapy Threads, Self Care Club, mental health advocacy, philanthropy and whatever other cool, badass things I decide to do!

  2. The vast beauty of the earth: the beaches, mountains, lakes, architecture, colors, smells,  thrills, and chills I haven't yet experienced.

  3. My voice hasn’t been completely heard yet: to spread my messages and tell my story.

  4. My empathy and compassion needs to be felt by more people: although I feel more deeply as an empath, which causes pain, the world needs more empathy. I'm an empathetic badass!

  5. Deep deep down, I love myself and care about myself and want to live!

  6. For my higher power - I trust the timing of my life and the things that happen in it (good or bad).

  7. For my future children.
  1. For those that look up to me: my patients, Self Care Club members, loved ones, my (future) step children, and even the strangers I'll never meet.

  2. To truly love myself and fall in love with my life more and more every day.

  3. I make the world a better and brighter place.

I hope this list inspires you to create one of your own. Making a list of reasons why we should be here is something to reference back to and remind ourselves why we are worthy of what we have. Let’s focus on the good and engrain this positive mindset into our daily lives!
